Blogging (Again)

BloggingI am ashamed of myself. I have not been updating this blog for sometime. So when my business partner Ian wrote a blog post on our company blog about derelict blogging and why it may not be good for everyone, I realize that something need to be done with this blog site. I can’t just leave it untended. So it’s blogging time again.

Back to blogging and a quick update

WordPress LogoIt’s been a while since I last blogged. Life has been so hectic that I hardly have the time to blog (not that I have been blogging regularly). I have been working on multiple projects since the beginning of the year. So I have been super busy with work.

In the beginning of the year, I have been toying with the idea of creating a new business in producing my own independent software products. But after careful consideration, I decided to focus on developing my consulting services in mobile and digital interaction development to establish a more steady stream of cash flow. I am still incubating these product ideas of mine on the side. Hopefully, I can start spending more time by Fall and turn one of these ideas into a viable business.

Code display and highlight plugin for WordPress

WordPress LogoI shopped around this weekend for a WordPress plugin that not only allows me to display code snippets on my blog but is also capable of syntax highlighting – thereby allowing the posted code to look pretty. For starters, this article provides a list of the top 12 WordPress code syntax display/highlight plugins. After installing and playing around with several plugins, I eventually settled for SyntaxHighlighter Evolved, which not only offers a great looking syntax highlighting theme against a dark background but is easily configurable and supports all of the programming languages I want to display on my blog, namely Objective-C, C#, Java, and JavaScript/HTML. Good stuff.

Day 2 of my new blog site

Twitter Icon (Wooden Theme) Day 2 of my new blog site. And I am excited once again about blogging and redesigning my website. I had some remorse after removing all past blog posts and starting from scratch. But I still think starting from a clean slate was a good decision. To keep track of the progress of this website, I start tracking the traffic on this website using Google Analytics. I also want to give a mention to the beautiful wooden-style icons that I downloaded and modified from Frank G. They look great with this theme. More icons are available from Flickr. I will make a few more modification to the website and then start blogging some more serious topics.

Starting over again

I was introduced to the world of blogging by fellow classmates Yoav, Matti, and Ilana at MIT in 2005. Back then, I was motivated and had plenty of materials to blog about – the new life as a student and the thought-provoking discussions we had in class. I maintained a blog about the SDM and TPP programs at MIT.

Then I went away to Asia in 2007 and haven’t actively blogged since then. Microblogging in the form of tweets became my online personal journal. Articulating and writing in 140 characters was infectious especially for busy people who still want to maintain an online presence. I haphazardly updated this blog for almost 3 years. Like weeds taking over a lawn after years of neglect, this blog too was dilapidated and was in dire need to an overhaul.

Today I have decided to give it fresh start. This means throwing away all the previous posts I had posted. I know it’s a pity to throw away of years of materials but really want a clean break this time. I want to come up with a new format and design structure supporting the new direction. The site will have a minimalist design, the posts terse, and an overall user experience that is visual-driven. I will be experiment with a couple of theme designs, layouts, and writing styles the next few days.
